A host of couples who gathered for a special service at All Saints Church, Winteringham, had one important thing in common.
All had been married at the church at varying times over the past 45 years and were eager to renew the vows they made at the time.
Hand in hand, many wearing flowers in buttonholes, they converged at
the church where they were greeted by the Rural Dean the Rev. Tony Burton and local vicar, the Rev George Towell.
The couple married earliest, in 1937, travelled from Selby for the
special day. They were Mr and Mrs H Coles, who brimmed with happiness as they strode down the path to the altar where they first took their vows 45 years ago.
One woman not able to stride out quite so easily, although equally
happy to be celebrating the afternoon with her husband was Mrs Vi Clarke, whose leg was heavily encased in plaster - an injury she sustained earlier at the chapel.
The service included a renewal of the marriage vows as well as the
traditional hymn “Love Divine, All Loves Excelling” and a modern one “Morning Has Broken.”
The couple with the shortest length of time between the taking of
vows were Mr and Mrs P Rowlands, of Winterton, who were married only last year.
