There was a special slice of cherry birthday cake with the usual
afternoon cup of tea at Humberside Senior Citizens’ Club in Winteringham Village Hall this week. For members were celebrating the 98th birthday of fellow member Mr John Matchett.
Mr Matchett was born near Horncastle and began his working life as a
gamekeeper. Apart from catching glimpses of “most of the members of royalty between the last two Queens” who were enjoying their sport, he also worked on the estate of the brewery family, Watneys.
After travelling around the country and working on many different
estates, Mr Matchett settled in Scunthorpe where he became a blastfurnace worker. He also worked at the old Ritz Cinema in Scunthorpe. 21 years ago he moved to Winteringham.
He proudly admits to being the oldest member of Scunthorpe Conservative Club and British Legion.
Picture shows: Mr Matchett getting a helping hand from his
neighbour, Mrs Irene Shaw (left) to cut his birthday cake. Also in the picture are Mr Jack Slingsby, and Mr Matchett’s home help, Mrs Irene Bray.
