Mary Fell has sent this picture of some young men from Winteringham,
enjoying a night out in Scunthorpe at the Oswald Hotel in the 1950s.
They are, left to right: George Kirkby, Jock Fell, Mike Wilson, Alec Ogg, Gordon Ogg, Pete Wilson and Mike Frost. Although a common scene in the 1950s, very few photographs were ever taken inside a bar, so this is a very special photo, evoking memories of a time when young men wore ties on a night out! Mary and Jock tell us that the scarves and socks worn were yellow, and that the coats were fashionable Gaberdines. Some but not all had motorbikes, and so may have gone for the night out in Pete Willson’s van which they called “Cannonball”. The Oswald Hotel was on Scunthorpe High Street and is now called “The Tavern”.
